A step-by-step look at what to expect during a home renovation, from the first site meeting through planning, construction, and handover.

Renovations are full of moving parts, which is why we wanted to take some time do developed a post on the Nomac Built blog that can help clients feel informed and in control from day one.

Whether you’re renovating a bathroom, extending your home, or planning something more complex, we believe the process should feel structured... not scattered.

This article walks you through how we manage that journey at Nomac Built, which covers:

  • What to expect from your first consultation
  • How we approach quoting and planning
  • The typical construction flow
  • How we communicate at every stage
  • Answers to common questions

If you’re wondering how to turn a renovation idea into a well-managed build, this will hopefully give you a clear sense of what that path looks like with us.

In short, the process looks like:

  1. On-site consultation and brief
  2. Preliminary estimate and plans
  3. Planning and specifications
  4. Construction begins

Let's dive in...

Step One: On-Site Consultation and Client Brief

Every project starts with a conversation, but the site visit is where ideas begin to take shape.

The first step is often a meeting on location, with a walk through the space together and talk about what’s possible.

Our goal at this stage isn’t to go beyond just offering building solutions to understanding how you live, what’s driving the renovation, and - importantly - what success looks like to you.

Along the way, we gather information such as:

  • Site notes and measurements
  • Photos and floor details
  • Any initial thoughts you have around materials, style, or features

You’ll also receive a short pre-consultation questionnaire and selection sheet to help kick-start your thinking.

“That first meeting really sets the tone for the whole project. We’re not just there to take measurements—we’re there to listen, understand what’s important, and build trust early on. You only get one chance to make a good first impression, and that applies both ways. Clients should feel heard and supported right from the start,” says Zak, co-owner of Nomac Built.

This first step lays the foundation for the entire project. It’s not rushed, and it’s not generic; it’s about listening well, asking the right questions, and making sure you feel comfortable moving forward.

Step Two: Preliminary Estimate and Draft Plans

Once we’ve completed the consultation, we take everything gathered from that first meeting and begin to shape it into something more concrete.

This is where your ideas start moving from concept into plan.

We prepare a draft layout or sketch that reflects the key changes discussed during the site visit, along with a preliminary estimate that’s grounded in real-world pricing.

It’s not a generic figure or a quick guess, but a considered summary based on the size, complexity, and style of your renovation.

This stage is designed to give you a clear sense of what the project will involve, including both the design direction and the financial scope.

You’ll be able to see how your brief has been interpreted and start to picture the renovation taking shape. Just as importantly, you’ll understand what’s likely to be required to bring it to life.

There’s no obligation to continue at this point. It’s an opportunity to reflect, ask questions, and decide whether the direction and approach feel like the right fit for you. If everything aligns and you’re confident to proceed, we move together into the detailed planning and documentation phase, fully informed and on the same page.

Step Three: Planning and Specifications

This is the stage where your project gets real. For a small, refundable commitment fee, we begin the detailed design and planning work needed to finalise your renovation.

There are a lot of moving parts, and we handle them in-house, including:

  • Scaled floor plans and elevations are refined based on feedback
  • Selections are confirmed—tiles, tapware, cabinetry, lighting, finishes
  • We liaise with trades and suppliers to confirm timelines and pricing
  • A full scope of works is documented, with both inclusions and exclusions clearly outlined

This isn’t just paperwork. It’s where we eliminate surprises, clarify costs, and lock in all the things that turn rough ideas into real schedules and contracts.

"We spend a lot of time making sure our quotes are clear and easy to follow, that means breaking down each stage of the project, showing visuals where it helps, and being upfront about inclusions, exclusions, and allowances. Our clients should never be left guessing or needing to read between the lines to figure out what something costs.” says Tom, co-owner of Nomac Built.

By the end of this stage, you’ll have a fixed-price contract, a realistic construction schedule, and total clarity on what’s ahead.

Step Four: Construction Begins

With everything signed off, it’s time to build.

Every renovation is different, but our process remains consistent, which helps keep projects running smoothly and on schedule.

We begin with careful preparation and strip-out, removing existing fixtures and materials to get the space ready for the next stage. Plumbing and electrical rough-ins follow, where all behind-the-wall services are completed before any finishes are installed. Waterproofing is applied and tested to ensure compliance and long-term durability, especially in wet areas.

Once that’s complete, tiling and fit-off begin, and this is where the visual transformation really starts to take shape. The final stage involves a detailed clean and walk-through, where we go over the completed space with you and make sure every detail has been delivered to standard.

Throughout the build, either Zak or Tom is directly involved in overseeing progress and maintaining quality control. We remain actively involved throughout the build, regularly checking in on progress, staying in contact, and making sure the work meets our standards.

Communication Throughout the Build

We’ve seen how poor communication can derail even the best-laid plans. That’s why our process is built around consistent updates and clear touch-points.

You’ll always know:

  • When we’re on site and what work is scheduled
  • Which trades are coming and going
  • What stage we’re at and what’s coming up next

Updates are delivered through our client portal, supported by phone calls or site meetings where needed. If something changes, you’ll hear about it from us first—not after the fact.

Renovations don’t have to feel chaotic. When communication is handled well, there’s a calmness to the whole process—and that’s what we aim for every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a renovation take from start to finish?

Most bathroom projects take around 3 to 4 weeks once on-site work begins. Larger extensions or full-home renovations typically range from 2 to 6 months depending on the complexity.

What if we change our mind halfway through?

It happens. We’ll always aim to accommodate reasonable changes where possible. We’ll talk you through any implications for time or budget before proceeding.

Will I deal directly with the builder?

Yes. You’ll speak with and receive updates from the person managing your job - usually one of the directors, not a middle layer of admin.

Renovations are big projects, but they don’t need to feel overwhelming.

With a structured process and strong communication, we help clients move from vague ideas to finished spaces with confidence; so if you’re thinking about a renovation, whether it’s one room or your whole home, we’d love to hear what you’ve got in mind.
